I served my apprenticeship as a pattern maker in the steel plant in High Bridge and joined the navy Sept. 4th 1942 and was in a rated company at boot
camp. We had all trades in when I went in. We had 130 in my class at boot camp in Great Lakes. I was given a second class petty officer rating
and ended up as a first class petty officer.
I was in boot camp only 30 days and had an 18 day leave then back to Great Lakes for a week then I was sent to Norfolk where I was there for about 2 weeks then was
transported to Trinidad, BWI where I spent about 15 months. We had 21 pattern makers cdown there and enough work for maybe 2 men so when the war manpower
commission came through most of us were sent back for reassignment. I had been on a destroyer when I first got down there and when the base was completed
we were transferred to the base where we lived in barracks. I have a lot of stories to tell about Trinidad!
I arrived back at Norfolk and was transferred to the U. S. S. Alcor which was on coffee grounds at pier 7. About 3 months of this the ship left for Portland,
Me. We were there for about 6 months and went down to Portsmouth, VA. for re-outfitting and left for the Panama canal. I did not get liberty on the west
coast and did not get off the ship until I got to Pearl Harbor. We were there a few months and left to head west. We stopped at Eniwok, then the Philippines
where we were when the Jajps gave notice of surrender. We left there for Okinawa. During the time we were there we had to leave port and head for the
China coast to ride out 2 typhoons. Those 30 foot waves were something. I finally left Okinawa for discharge and was discharged at Lido Beach, Long Island
on December 23rd, 45. Before I left Okinawa I was called to the division office and was told if I stayed with the ship I would be made a chief petty officer.
This is something I always wanted but I wanted to go home. I really regret that judgement to this day. The ship went to Japan and back to Ca.

USS Ernest G. Small, DD-838
Off Hungnam, Korea
Buried at Sea
Joe was assigned to the damage control party forward. They took up their station in the crew's mess where his body was found.
The flag used to cover Joseph at the burial was received and is treasured by his family. It had been well-used in service and was lovingly repaired by
many hands, just as those same hands laid him to rest in a brief but moving memorial service from the fantail of the ship at 11:34 on October 8th.
The Small, a radar picket destroyer, had struck a mine, killing 9 and wounding 18. The ship completely lost its bow three days later in the winds of approaching
Typhoon Ruth steamed and was towed backward to the port of Kure, Japan, 600 miles from the site of the blast.
